5-a-side national cup competition for girls

Sportsmatch award: £20,000
School teams around the country will take part in local rounds, based in each local education area, leading to eight area finalists. These will compete in the national finals at the JJB Soccerdome, Derby in April 2005. 7,000 girls will compete from 1,000 schools. The project builds on the popularity of football in primary schools and motivates girls to continue playing in secondary schools, by filling a gap before the U13s tournaments begin. The tournament costs are too high for the English FA to fund themselves so the sponsorship and Sportsmatch funding has rescued the scheme from oblivion.

An example of how Rugby League is trying to expand interest in the game by going into schools near participating clubs. 170 of these schools will be new to rugby league. More than 20,000 kids will participate in the coaching sessions, 4,000 will go on to attain RFL skills awards and 3,500 will take part in 68 festivals.
RFL has a number of schemes like this around the country in its positive programme to grow the game from the grass roots up, including Derbyshire, St Helens, and Wakefield.
