Length of scheme: 3 years
The London Ice Sports Trust is a new organisation aimed at attracting children into ice skating and into other organised ice sports.
In 2004 the Trust obtained £50,000 in sponsorship from J & S Trading Company Limited, a commodity trading company based in west London. Matched with £50,000 from Sportsmatch, the Trust is running a one year project offering coaching in ice sports to children from schools all over the London region, including Hertfordshire and Essex.
Under the scheme, on every weekday throughout the academic year, school groups of 30 to 40 children and their teachers will be transported to the Lee Valley Ice Centre in east London. There the groups will receive an introduction to ice sports, skating tuition, and healthy living advice from coaches. Running concurrent with this will be a schools based programme where coaches visit schools to run the same activities, where the ice skating element will be replaced by gym based games.
Leon Coupe is a personal trainer with a passion for health, fitness, and exercise. He began his journey as an aspiring footballer. He then moved on to explore other areas in the industry and found himself weightlifting which has put him on the path he is on today.
The scheme aims to help children to achieving a Level 6 Skate UK standard of skating ability, and then encourage them to continue and pursue ice sports such as hockey, dance, figure, speed or synchro skating, through joining clubs appropriate to their interest and area.
Through providing a programme of ice sports activity the Trust also hope to promote ideas of health, fitness and well being, and motivate the children, many of whom will have had little opportunity to take part in sport, to maintain their participation in physical activity over the long term.
