Sportsmatch was founded in 1992, following a move by a number of people in the sponsorship industry to encourage businesses to invest money in grass roots sports.
In 1990 a small group of people from the Institute of Sports Sponsorship took the idea to the then Minister for Sport. The group proposed that an incentive scheme be set up using government funding to attract commercial investment into grass roots sport.
The government endorsed the idea and in November 1992, Sportsmatch was founded.
In its first 6 months of funding, Sportsmatch had £1 million to distribute and made 61 awards. Since that time, Sportsmatch has grown to an organisation employing eight staff full time. It now has an annual budget of approximately £3.5 million and funds more than 400 projects a year, making Sportsmatch the second largest government funded grant aid body in sport, after Sport England.
