Application been rejected?

Decisions on Sportsmatch awards are made by our independent Panel and its judgements are final. If your application has been rejected and you are not sure why, you should contact your Scheme Manager who will explain the general grounds on which the Panel decided not to make an award.

Remember, Sportsmatch funds are limited and unfortunately not every application will be successful.

Your Scheme Manager will also be able to offer advice on what to do next.

Complaints Procedure

We pride ourselves on our service to applicants. However, if you are dissatisfied with the way your application has been handled, you should speak initially to the member of staff concerned. We hope that most problems can be settled quickly in this way. If you wish to take the matter further and make a formal complaint you can write to the Director, at the following address:

Thomas Godfrey

Commercial Director

Sport England
Third Floor, Victoria House
Bloomsbury Square
London, WS1B 4SE

You will receive a prompt acknowledgement and a full response as soon as possible. The Director will inform the Sportsmatch Panel of formal complaints.

Appeals Process

If a Project is rejected, the applicant has the right to submit an appeal against the decision and ask for their application to be re-assessed.  This right can be exercised following the Panel decision.  Prior to this stage of the process, applicants have the right to reapply rather than formally appeal.

There are two grounds on which an applicant may make an appeal:

  • material procedural unfairness
  • misunderstanding, misinterpretation or failure to consider information.

Each appeal is assessed for compliance by reference to the documentary evidence available. It should be noted that the reallocation of a Project into the Grants Management Process does not guarantee a grant from Sportsmatch.  Even if a decision is made to spend more time developing the application, it is possible that the application might not pass Sportsmatch’s criteria at a later date in the decision-making process.
