The Ability Sports Association is a registered charity, which provides professionally coached sport and active recreation for disabled and disadvantaged children and adults in the West of England.
In 2003 the ASA received £2,500 in sponsorship from Unum Provident, a disability insurance group. The ASA matched with a further £2,500 from Sportsmatch and with other partnership funding used the money to run a multisport programme for persons with a disability.
The programme was based at St Pauls Community Sports Academy in Bristol, a new indoor multisports club for those with special needs. The programme provided 40 weeks of coaching for adults and children on weekdays, at weekends and after school. People of all ages were encouraged to participate and the programme was promoted in a number of areas, including special needs schools, day centres, and disability groups and their affiliated clubs.
The project enabled the ASA to enter the Bristol area, which they had not worked in before, and received the full backing of MENCAP South West. In addition to generating a greater awareness of disability sport, the programme also succeeded in creating stronger links between the various disability organisations in the area.
